Hunters get lost and die. So why does everyone laugh at me for carrying a pack when I hunt?

I keep reading about hunters getting lost and dying. So when I go hunting I take GPS, maps, compasses, waterproof matches, tent, sleeping bag, water filter, food, warm clothing. Basically, I take all the stuff my dead father used for backpacking (except the GPS). I tie dozens of flurescent pink marker ribbon all the way from my car to my hunting spot. (Yes, I remove them when I leave, I am environmentally responsible.) To me, this is just common sense. I was raised in Los Angeles, not the backwoods. When I mention this to other people at the gun club, they roll their eyes or laugh themselves sick. Even my best friend, who is a Forest Ranger, and has to waste time finding stupid lost hunters, snorts when he sees my Dad's 30 year old Kelty Pack with all the stuff in it. I think I am showing good sense. Why do I catch a load of ridicule for this?
Cane Toad.

I didn't think of the directions in the car. Also I use pink because NO OTHER hunter picks it.

I think you are being fairly sensible... you might even consider backpacking out to a base camp and then day pack from there.

The tent and bag might be a bit overkill and there are certainly lighter packs these days, but if your comfortable no reason not to use your dad's.

My day pack for hunting includes the maps, compass, gps, food and definitely the water filter, also a space blanket and poncho. I'm so cal also, though I have a lot of wilderness experience, you just never know what'll happen out there in Angeles/Mojave/Los Padres/etc.
