Hiking up a mountain... two day trip... advice...?
I am hiking up a tree covered mountain close to my town in washington and I don´t really have a set route, all I have are a few satalite pictures, rumors of an old logging road and a creek to follow up. I plan to hike one day and leave flagging tape behind, than to hike back down the next day. What should I bring. I am going with two people and all we really have is regular school backpacks, a 3 man tent that is really light, sleeping bags, and some other stuff. what gear do you suggest we bring, and what if any techniques could we use in our bushwacking adventure. Also, what kinds of foods would you suggest we bring. We are carrying up hotdogs for our first lunch that we will eat along the way, but what as far as lightweight and yummy camping food what would you suggest! Also, what sort of things should I bring to hang food from bears, dry clothes, or take care of ourselves and find our way home should we find ourselves in an emergency or lost!
Walking sticks.. they are seriously good things. I was surprised how good it was when I did a two day trip up/down a mountain on a set route. The path was marked here and there so I can't offer tips for creating your own path since I haven't done that. Definitely let people know where you're going and when you expect to be back in case there's an accident.
Rope & tarp. If it rains you can hang the tarp so you have a dry area to cook/eat. You might be able to hang your clothes under the tarp to dry as well, depending on how bad it rains. Layers of high-tech synthetic clothes--no cotton.
Peanut butter, jelly, and bread is pretty easy to carry, won't go bad, and easy to assemble into sandwiches. If you bring dried fruit, don't overdo it and eat too many. You don't want the runs in the woods. (can you guess what happened to my friend during the mountain hike?) We had some of that space age freeze dried food and it was god awful.
